  1. Thanks for this odd one.

Wonder if you maybe have this record on CD:
Passage from 1981 with Louis Johnson.

By the way, think the Cliff Magness solo album is really crap. He is really not a singer and the tracks are so so so boring. When he try to sing he sounds like a strangled cat.

  2. its funny you say this Daniel cause I remember years back when I spoke out (with a review) about the magness album not being nearly as good as planet 3 album, and nobody seemed to agree. Every reply/review already there said it was AMAZING. I do not think its crap. He is the singer on Planet 3 album remember. Do you like that one at all? I love Planet 3 just this was a let down in comparison. Still, if I had not had my expectations so high I maybe would have enjoyed this more. I think it has some good tracks (dreams fade away is a brilliant one and its only love), there were just a few ballads that sounded awful among a few other bad tracks. I still definately think it is worth checking out. My fav song is Dreams Fade Away which is purely like Planet 3 magic. Probably if they took the few good songs off this and put them with the few good numbers from Planet 3 -Gems unearthed, they could have made a "worthy" sequel to the original planet 3 album. Thanks

  3. Well, Planet 3 is good except from the synthetic production which is so outdated. I still think that Cliff only shall write songs though the vocal at Planet 3 is much better than on Solo.

  4. If you never did, you should try out the planet 3 2002 jay graydon remaster (with dreamers as 10th track)...the album sounds like it was recorded yesterday. Apart from the style being 80s, there is a whole new dimension to the sound quality (MILES better than the older Japan cd or the european one) but still,... maybe it is the sort of production you do not like to begin with. Another thing we must consider though, when hearing all these albums in mp3, is how much mp3 compression can hurt/degrade some productions, especially older kinds that traditionally had a lot of respect for dynamics. It really depends on the production and music style I find. Sometimes I will find it hard to tell the difference between a decent mp3 rip and a full .wave... this is common with some acoustic guitar music I find, and sometimes others, but lots of the time I can hear so much weakening to great music of the past through mp3 listening when I compare it to the real cd (If I own the cd). A lot of the time the real cd release itself sounds lacking compared to a great condition record! (if we talk about 70s/early 80s albums especially). In other words, it was only "just there" when put into digital format to begin with, so anyway, that is why I always think it is important we rip at AT LEAST 192kbps as davidfosterfan is doing. Thanks again. Enjoying the rips. Debarge and everything sounds great. And nice discussion on Planet 3

  5. by the way, I am very interested, does anybody know does the Jay Graydon 25th anniversary re-release of Airplay sound much better than previous releases? I am thinking of buying it because my copy which is the actual 1986 first cd release of the album sounds horrific. It sits beside my 1980s cd release of Foreigner Agent Provocateur ; ) (another cd to remind you what peoples problem was with cd format when it was new). Cheers

  6. I have the 25th anniversary re-release but I haven't compare it to the old release. I will rip it for ya and maybe you will rip Planet 3 2002 jay graydon remaster cause I have only the original version from 1990. The rip is into 320 kbps. Hope you can do the same.

  7. Have to disagree regarding the comment about Clif Magness' vocals. IMO, he's a top vocalist, easily much better than some of the overrated westcoast singers.... "Solo" still sounds great, as does "A Heart From The Big Machine" / "Music From The Planet". Perhaps "Solo" isn't as consistent as the Planet 3 debut cos basically "Solo" is a collection of Clif's demos with Planet 3 and also on his own.
The only thing that could've made these albums better are the real drums... the programmed drums on these are a bit hard to stomach at first, but well, I can accept it now after many listens ;)

  8. Daniel. Very nice of you. Thanks (Sorry for the late reply. I did not notice your message). Sadly, I dont have the planet 3 remaster anymore. I am in disbelief that I dont have a cdr copy around. I will continue looking through my endless spindles of cdrs. Usually when I sell an album, I always make a full quality copy, naturally. If I dont find it (which I still like to think is unlikely), I will buy the cd again within next two-three weeks (as it is a good cd gift to give somebody) and put the link here for you in exchange. It really does sound far better than the old cds of it. I have the euro version from 92 in original now and as pretty looking as it is (the cover design to this version is my fav), the sound just isnt the same quality at all as the 02 remaster. Also the new track 10 Dreamers is a great ending song which sounds a bit like Broken Wings Mr.Mister in one sense. Thanks again. Much appreciated. Look here for the link at 320 within a few weeks ok. I look forward to download airplay and give you my thoughts on the sound compared to 320 mp3s of my 86 Airplay cd
